One way to deny anything is going on is to throw some truth into a fictional story, so all of it gets tossed into the ashheap of a Hollywood plot. The Illuminati has been around for a lot longer than Lara Croft has. Secret societies have been around for ages; in fact, many people believe that the Pharisees and Sadducees were actually secret societies. This would explain some of the particularly scathing comments of the Lord to these people. They knew exactly who Jesus was, and still would not repent.

Though of course years of denying Him can push this knowledge into the subconscious so that they can actually convince themselves that they do not believe he exists.
